For most Ukrainians in Slovakia temporary protection is the simplest legal status: quick registration, access to the labour market, health care. It has one weakness, it is temporary and its extension depends on European Union decisions. This article summarises how long it is valid, what happens after it ends and why it pays to arrange temporary residence now.
How long it is valid
Temporary protection in Slovakia has been automatically extended until 4 March 2027. Holders do not need to file anything or visit the police. Validity can be checked on the Ministry of Interior portal. At EU level a further extension is being discussed; the officially confirmed date for Slovakia is currently 4 March 2027.
What happens after it ends
The amendment to the Act on Residence of Foreigners settles what happens when temporary protection ends. Key points:
- Holders will be able to apply for temporary residence for employment, business, study or family reunification.
- The application needs proof of the purpose of stay (employment contract, trade license, study confirmation, family documents) and proof of housing.
- Those who do not apply for residence may stay in Slovakia for at most one more year after protection ends, but only for the purpose of voluntary return home. So apply for temporary residence while protection is still in force.
- Employers may keep employing people with protection if the employment continues without interruption.
- The state housing contribution is tied only to the official temporary protection period.
Digital documents from 1 October 2026
From 1 October 2026 residence documents should also be available digitally in the eDoklady app. Note: a physical card is still required at the border. The digital version helps in everyday situations in Slovakia, not when travelling.
Why not wait until March 2027
Switching from protection to temporary residence is not a formality. You need:
- Purpose of stay: work, business, study or family with residence.
- Housing: a lease or the owner's consent, possibly an electronic confirmation.
- Documents from Ukraine: for example a criminal record extract that must be obtained and translated.
- Time: the police decide within statutory deadlines, but the rush before March 2027 will be heavy.
Anyone with a job, a business or family with residence can apply today. Temporary residence gives certainty independent of EU decisions and opens the way to permanent residence.
